Call for interested contractors - Drinking water quality Chemical Investigations Programme

Published On 06/07/2018

New UKWIR project focussed on evaluation and management of risks presented to drinking water quality by emerging contaminants: "How do we achieve 100% compliance with drinking water standards by 2050? Risk assessment of CIP data with respect to implications for drinking water sources"

The UK Water Industry is looking to determine whether any emerging contaminants, measured through the Chemical Investigation Programme, pose a potential risk to the quality of drinking water supplies. This is to assist in achieving the outcome of  “An appropriate balance of risk with regards to substances of concern, their public health impact, and mitigation”.

The outputs of this project are to include:

  • Understanding the risks of emerging contaminants to drinking water quality
  • Demonstrate to customers and regulators that the water industry is evaluating emerging risks to water quality
  • Identify any materials of concern and allow the second phase of the project to be properly scoped and ensure the appropriate research organisation is identified to take this forward.
  • Use the ouputs of Chemical Investigation Programme (CIP) review and assess whether any chemicals of concern are entering raw water supplies at concentrations which have the potential to lead to public health impacts.
  • Assess any identified compounts for their potential to pass through a typical potable water treatment process and  identify which treatment process is least effective at removal.
