Flow Modelling of Urban Water Distribution Systems that incorporate Water Conservation Fittings

Domestic water conservation methods reduce the volume of water that flushes the sewerage system and hence the distance that solids are moved – but by how much? This newly published UKWIR project report summarises the work to flow model the impact of water conservation fittings on drainage systems up to 100mm diameter.

The aim of this work was to assess the impact of water conserving fixtures and fittings on UK building drainage (wastewater collection) systems of up to 100mm diameter, ranging from the point where the appliance discharges into the collection drain to the connection to the common sewer.  This involved taking an inventory of water conserving devices currently available, and to quantify the effect that these could have on wastewater collection systems in terms of increased solids residence times and creation of downstream blockages caused by solid waste deposition or other flow problems.
