Call for interested Contractors: How do we halve our abstractions by 2050?

A new UKWIR project is open to expression of interest, asking how we halve our abstractions by 2050? This project will involve a research review & gap analysis

The objectives of this project are to;

Prioritise the research requirements to achieve a 50% reduction in abstraction for drinking water production by 2050, and establish the baseline of current and predicted abstraction from which to evaluate change

Contractors task to include:

  1. Undertake a review of current and potential research activities on means to reduce water abstraction and understand the degree of alignment between UKWIR’s current programme and those at national and international levels. This should also take account of current strategies in this area, e.g. Water wise – National Water Strategy;
  2. Review UK and Ireland’s Water Resource Management Plans, along with other initiatives (e.g. Water Resources South East), to identify differences and commonalities in the approach to reduced abstraction. Identify the different sources of water (e.g. ground, surface, effluent re-use, rainwater harvesting) and how the use of these sources may change;
  3. To summarise current and predicted abstraction levels for all water companies in order to provide a baseline from which to evaluation change;
  4. Assimilate and document the outcomes of the above activities to identify synergies, overlaps, and gaps in research and propose the most appropriate funding route for delivery (e.g. UKWIR / UKRI / UK-Water Partnership / Other);
  5. Conduct a workshop to review the above outputs and agree the prioritisation for future research needs. The document produced in (4) should be circulated prior to the workshop;
  6. Summarise and document the outputs of the workshop in the final report.
